American Craftsman style began in the early 19th century and had endured the test of time seeing many restorations, revivals, and interpretive spins to modern structures. Developed from the perceived devaluation of the individual worker due to the industrial revolution, this movement focused on handwork over mass production.  The Craftsman seamlessly incorporates many of those design elements into a quaint studio.

Our affordable backyard studios come with engineered wood beams that offers a dramatic accent to your final piece. This prefab studio comes with three different beams—there’s one at the peak, and each side wall has one as well. They run the length of the structure from front to back. Your Craftsman prefab studio ceiling is finished with your choice of Cedar or Pine, tongue and groove or shiplap, 6” or 4” spacing on the vaulted ceiling.

Engineered wood beams are a dramatic accent.  There are three beams total, one at the peak, and one on each side wall that all run the length of the structure front to back.  The ceiling is finished with your choice of Cedar or Pine, tongue and groove or shiplap, 6” or 4” spacing on the vaulted ceiling (See our Standards/Options page for different ceiling liner types) with a deep rich wood feel that matches the wood used on the 3’ front overhang outside.  This creates a continuous flow from front overhang and across the ceiling above.

Larger trim around doors and windows that is finished to leave the natural wood exposed and match the 4x4 wood corbels are just a few highlights. The roof rafter tails are exposed on the exterior of the building while the natural wood fascia is held up, so the tails are in full view.

Coast Studios has increased the overall height of the Craftsman. This allows the use of clearstory windows above the door and windows on the front side to allow lots of natural lite into the studio. Double windows adjacent to the front follow traditional craftsman styling.  All windows have grills standard.

Our handmade dentil molding is composed of three different trims and flashings and is assembled at our facility. Our backyard Craftsman prefab studio kits meet the strictest energy code requirements. We offer French doors that are either 5’ or 6’. We also carry 3’ full glass doors upon request, and all of our doors can be painted to add another classy element to your studio’s look. The reason we design our studios to be extremely tight is that this keeps the heat out and maintains a healthy, energy-efficient environment.

Cement board lap siding is standard for our affordable backyard studios, and available in a wide range of sizes to match an existing home or give your yard a different look with something smaller or wider. Mixing sidings are easy through our pricing program. This allows you to save money on sides of the building that are not visible.

That is why we handle all of our projects on a case-by-case basis. We will work with you to determine the best approach to completing your project. If you live on the West Coast, we are happy to come to your area and build your prefab studio for you. If you live outside of the West Coast, we’ll send you a Craftsman studio kit that has everything you need to build it in your backyard!
